Alimentation du merlan Merlangius merlangus L. en Mer Celtique ArchiMer
Du Buit, Marie-henriette; Merlina, Frédéric.
The importance of predation by the whiting (Merlangius merlangus ) from the Celtic Sea has been studied by analysis of stomach contents. Eight hundred and thirteen whitings have been examined during 1984-1986 period. Fish food totalizes 97% of food. It is chiefly a swimming species: no cannibalism has been observed. The daily food index varies between 2 and 4% according to the length and the annual consumption on fishes of nominal catches (11230 t for 1983) would reach 135,000 t corresponding to species already fished for human consumption and the fish meal industry.

Evaluation of self-feeders as a tool to study diet preferences in groups of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) ArchiMer
Millot, Sandie; Nilsson, Jonatan; Fosseidengen, Jan Erik; Begout, Marie-laure; Kristiansen, Tore.
Among other applications, self-feeding has been used to study food preferences in fish allowing them to choose between feeders with different food content. Preference tests assume that (i) trigger actuations are motivated by appetite, (ii) fish can learn which feeder contains which food and discriminate between feeders solely on the basis of their content, and (iii) in groups of fish, the triggering preferences is representative for the individuals of the group. We studied individual triggering behaviour in four groups of 14 Atlantic cod (length of 34 +/- 2 cm, weight of 424 +/- 102 g, mean +/- SE, water temperature comprised between 7-8 degrees C) that were first given the choice between two self-feeders with identical content (Period 1 of 14 days) and...

Gaidropsarus pacificus (Temminck & Schlegel), a junior synonym of Rhinonemus cimbrius (Linnaeus) (Pisces: Gadiformes: Gadidae) Naturalis
Machida, Y..
The gadid fish, Gaidropsarus pacificus, originally described as Motella pacifica by Temminck & Schlegel (1842) is reduced to a junior synonym of Rhinonemus cimbrius (Linnaeus, 1758). Confusion on the systematic status of Gaidropsarus pacificus seems to have resulted from the inadequate description of barbels in the original description of Motella pacifica.

Les chalutages experimentaux: Utilisation de la temperature et de la profondeur comme variables auxiliaires. ArchiMer
Chevalier, R.
Very often stratification of bottom-trawl surveys is done by using a stratified random sampling scheme. If a survey is directed towards a group of species, the sampling scheme has to be a compromise between these different interests. So the sampling scheme is not totally efficient for each of the species. The use of auxiliary variables, as depth or temperature, looks as if such supplementary informations could neither improve the efficiency of the estimators nor the subsequent analysis (analysis of covariance).

Observations sur la répartition et l’abondance du merlan Merlangius merlangus (Gadidae) en Manche orientale à partir des données des campagnes CGFS ArchiMer
Carpentier, Andre.
Since 1988, the IFREMER Fisheries Resources Laboratory in Boulogne-sur-Mer is carrying out a pluriannual project in the Eastern Channel to estimate, directly and by age groups, the abundance and the recruitment of species of commercial interest. These data are obtained during an annual trawl survey (taking place in October) which gives indications about the fish populations distribution and allows to get biological informations needed for stock assessments. The present study aimed to analyse the distribution and the abundance of whiting (Merlangius merlangus). In the Channel, this species is one of the most exploited by the French small-scale fishery. The results showed that the whiting distribution was mainly restricted to shallow waters in October and...
